TRX clutch into S10

Ok, taking this from the wanted section to the tech :)

Searching I found this, but cant find much else :(

Jenna wrote:Thanks for the info on the clutch shifty, as yet I haven’t pulled it apart so no idea if this one has the retainer wire or not. Looks like I will defiantly go with the Kevlar clutch pack now but what I may also do is swap out the xtz basket too for a trx one and get that extra plate in, the extra height of the stack shouldn’t be an issue for the cover as the pull gear has more than enough movement to cope with the extra height....

What parts do I need from the TRX?
Is it just the external clutch basket? Is it different plates, and inner basket and outer plate?

So is the TRX clutch basket straight bolt in? do you need the clutch cover too?

Thanks
Bruce.

the xtz clutch uses a 7 steel plate and 8 friction pad pack, the 3vd tdm and newer uses 8 and 9 with two outer friction pads being thicker from memory. The early xtz baskets had a retainer clip which got replaced with the revised pad set up.

the clutch baskets are the same but have a different part number prefix as i suspect the later ones have better take up springs, the bearing is the same and the pressure plate (cover) is the same. not sure but i think the tdm/trx had a stonger spring though.

Timbo is the guy to ask, he knows way more about engin guts than me.

I bet its a 1 on1 fit.
You can use the S10 clutchcover again.

Only the 89 XTZ uses the anti-judder spring and the wire retainer ring plus(8 steel and 8 friction)

XTZ 90-94
The xtz uses EIGHT steel plates and EIGHT friction plates
One slick steel, seven non slick steel.
The slick steel goes in first. Then friction ,and then steel etc.the last friction has a notch which lines up with dot on clutch centre.

XTZ 95
same as 90-94 except all frictions are the same (i.e. none of the friction plates have the notch)

if you order new genuine friction plates for 90-94 they supercede to 95 spec.

TDM 91-93 same set up as XTZ 90-94
TDM 94-95 same set up as XTZ 95

TDM 96-98 4TX and TRX uses EIGHT steel and NINE friction .

TDM 99 4TX has two odd friction plates which go in first and last.

I have the 89 XTZ with judder spring.
I changed the clutch completely with a 4TX TDM clutch from the year 2000.

No problem at all, using the old 3LD clutch cover.
It doesnt come easier.

Hey team
I've been talking with Timbo on this. BRILLIANT info from him... :) :) :)!!

For anyone else searching this subject.

I am not sure about Guru, but I have built/rebuilt/tuned etc a few of these for Twins racing and have tried most of the possible combinations of parts!

The TRX main basket is a straight swap.
The TRX has better crush springs setup and will last longer.
Obviously check the state of the crush springs in the back of the basket for wear. Everything should be tight and no sign of rattle or wear.

If you can get the whole clutch - do!

I would check all of your existing plates for thickness and flat (friction should be about 3mm with a min of 2.8mm)

The main difference between the 3LD (S10) and TRX is the inner basket which does not have the silly groove and anti stick washer in it - thus allowing the use of an extra friction plate and a nicer feel to the clutch - at the expense of the occasional 'sticky' action when cold.

If you have a lathe you can convert the 3LD inner by the simple expedient of machining the groove out, which then leaves room for the extra friction plate before the first steel. You will also possibly need to replace that first steel as it is slightly thicker, though a bit of wear in the rest will leave room!

As an aside the TDM's come with the 3LD inner but without the spring washer bit! You may find your XTZ has had the springywasher bit removed and binned. This was a std Yamaha set up at the time, across the range, and most were binned by the Yamaha mechanics after complaints of clutch slip!

So to precis. The basket is a straight swap, the inner drum is better, but you need an extra friction plate, everything else is the same.

Hope that helps and good luck.
Tim

PS I have loads of plates if you need an extra one, you can have for the postage! Just been reading the forum posts, so went looking in a manual and it appears the TRX steel plates are all thinner than the XTZ ones - so allowing an extra pair!

You can just use only the basket if required
